Marking 100 years of cold-weather fun in the Colorado mountains, the Grand Country Colorado Winter Sports Carnival kicks off over New Year's weekend and ends Feb. 11, 2012.
People from across the country gather for the celebration, which features activities related to both historical and modern aspects of skiing and other winter sports. Events cater to a wide range of ages and ability levels. The event is sponsored by the Grand County Historical Association.
The Carnival kicks off on Dec. 30 with breakfast, ice skating, a bonfire and fireworks.
More than 90 different Winter Carnival events have been planned for the six-week extravaganza. The events and exhibits include ski history exhibitions, a sculpture contest, ski movie nights, full moon skiing, tubing, fishing contests and much more.
While Hot Sulphur Springs will be the carnival's hub, events will be held in Winter Park, Fraser, Grand Lake, Granby, Kremmling and the lakes and mountains in between.
Those of you looking for an activity in Rocky Mountain National Park should check out one of the ranger-led ski or snowshoe trips.
