On your way across the beautiful prairies of eastern Colorado, take a break from the road to stretch your legs at these spots in Morgan County. From historic towns to a state park known for its wildlife watching and big night skies, these three destinations invite you to stop and enjoy the best of Morgan County.

Located along the South Platte River, the town of Fort Morgan was featured on the second season of HGTV’s “Home Town Takeover” which focused on renovating local businesses, homes and public spaces. Check out their handiwork—and satisfy your sweet tooth—at Mosqueda Delicacies. The shop dishes up housemade ice cream alongside unique snacks like fresas con crema (strawberries and cream), elote chorreado (nacho-style corn in a cup), and chupacabras (a fruit cup topped with chamoy, Tajin, lime and served with a tamarind candy straw).
Or grab a bite to eat at The Block. This shared-use kitchen hosts rotating entrepreneurial chefs from around northeast Colorado, so you can always find something new to try. Be sure to order a drink at Moonlight Cocktail Bar. This speak-easy style bar is a permanent fixture at The Block, serving up craft cocktails, wine, beer and mocktails.
Just outside of town, Country Road Vines and Wines has a great tasting room and outdoor patio where you can sample some local vintages. The small-batch wines include a variety of dry, sweet and dessert-style wines, with new styles released seasonally.

2,411-acre Jackson Lake is one of the prime draws of Morgan County. The popular state park offers plentiful opportunities to get out on the water whether you’re looking to swim, kayak, tube, paddleboard or boat. The nature trails and sandy shoreline provide a prime vantage point to look for wildlife or go birdwatching—in the summer, many American white pelicans can be seen cruising on the water.
The state park also has 251 campsites, most of which have electric hookups. If you’re looking for a unique overnight experience, hammock camping is allowed at tent sites 49-52 in Lakeside Campground and 79-82 in Pelican Campground. Three hammock posts are available at each site. Even if you aren’t camping, be sure to stay out after the sun sets—the state park is an International Dark Sky Park, and the high plains location means you won’t have any mountains blocking your night sky view.

Located 15 minutes east of Fort Morgan, the town of Brush was once a supply stop on the Texas-Montana Trail, a famous cattle drive. You can learn more about the area’s cowboy culture and pioneer days at the Brush Area Museum & Cultural Center.
Continue your journey through time with a self-guided historic walking tour of downtown Brush and cap it off with a delicious bite to eat at Victor’s Sushi or Glassi, a family run restaurant serving Indian cuisine alongside American classics. After your meal, grab a cue and play a game of pool.
