Sangre de Cristo National Heritage Area

The Sangre de Cristo National Heritage Area (SdCNHA) is a part of the San Luis Valley located in beautiful southern Colorado. The Heritage Area embraces 3,000 square miles within the counties of Alamosa, Conejos, and Costilla. This area is rich with heritage and considered the “Cradle of Colorado” with the oldest church, Colorado’s first town, historic trains, many historical sites, and agricultural riches. The heritage area not only offers significant historical sites, but beautiful mountain scenery surrounding the valley offers many outdoor recreational activities and holds many attractions.

Visitors enjoy outdoor activities such as all-terrain vehicle and 4-wheeling, hiking, fishing, bicycling, climbing, floating, hunting, watching wildlife, sightseeing, picnicking, skiing, snowboarding, ice climbing, sledding, and snow tubing.

There are many attractions, such as train rides on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad—a National Historic Landmark. There are seasonal festival events and activities for the whole family year-round. The Great Sand Dunes National Park has the tallest sand dunes in North America and three wildlife refuges offer opportunities to see wildlife up close. The Los Caminos Antiguos Scenic Byway is a lovely drive that highlights heritage sites as well as the San Luis Valley’s beauty.
